My Country, Now and Forever

My Country Now and Forever
11 September 2013
I’d never been to a Civil War re-enactment when The Prince Consort suggested we go to the Battle of Richmond re-enactment. I expected to see folks dressed up like their ancestors, what I didn’t expect was the somber reflection of history.
My father’s ancestors came to this country four hundred years ago, landing both in Virginia and the Massachusetts Bay Colony, heading for California before the War Between the States. My ancestors fought on both sides of our Civil War. In fact my maternal grandfather’s family gave up gold prospecting and emigrated from Canada at the time of the war, one brother fighting for the Union and the other for the Confederacy.
While TPC and I watched the re-enactment, a young boy standing behind us asked his father, “Which side are we for?” I kept thinking, ‘both, we are both sides.’
This is my country. Our hearts belong to what we truly believe is right. We fight for what is right. We always have, and we always will.
